The person who gets the job is the one who not only meets but exceeds the hiring manager’s expectations. Put yourself in their position for a second. You want to hire someone who is confident, has strong communication skills and is talented. Choosing the right individual for the job is a major responsibility and will reflect back on the hiring manager. This is a very important factor that job seekers often overlook. When you remove yourself from job seeker tunnel vision you’ll be able to see the process in a whole different light.
There are several factors that will influence whether you get the job or not. Such factors include the current status of the team, budget, time and energy needed for the position. Understanding these factors will help you understand how to be a better candidate. Understanding this concept will help you generate a resume of interest and become the ideal candidate.
Evaluate yourself as a candidate from a manager’s perspective. How can you solve this manager’s problems? He/she has a position they want to fill. Yes, they want to give you the job but you have to prove that you can live up to expectations and make their life easier. How do you do this? Begin by looking at the job description carefully. What are they looking for and can you really offer a solution to what they’re looking for?
Evaluate yourself as a possible fit for the job by taking a look at your job history and experience. Do your recent job titles directly fit into the job description of what is needed? Have you shown career progression? This is usually what hiring managers look for, someone who is capable of getting the job done with a vision on the future.
When you’ve received an interview date, prepare as much as possible. How you perform on the interview will either make or break all of your hard work. Concentrate on what you want the manager to know about you and your work ethic and skills. Think about the questions that may be asked pertaining to your resume and have the answers ready. Mentally prepare yourself for the interview, putting yourself in the manager’s shoes, so that you’re not caught off guard.
