Too often people find themselves doing what they don’t like for a living. Unsatisfying jobs usually lead to unhappy people. This is true simply because you typically can’t leave being unsatisfied behind at your workplace. This means you’ll probably be taking your unsatisfied emotions along with you wherever you go. If this is the case, why do so many people end up in the wrong career anyway? This is a good question and we’ll now explore some of the reasons why.
Modern business philosophy has taught people to simply put aside their emotions and think with their heads. Using your heart when making important decisions, such as choosing a career, can lead to making a detrimental mistake. This thought process has been so indoctrinated in minds; people have decided to ignore their instincts as well.
This means that even if your instinct is telling you this isn’t the place you want to be, your mind is telling you otherwise. You mind may be saying that it’s a great salary package and you can’t really guarantee you’ll get a better offer somewhere else. Self-doubt is a big starter for an unsatisfying career.
Living your parent’s dream is another reason why many people end up doing something they don’t enjoy. Under normal circumstances most parents’ want for their kids what they think is the best. While this may be well-intentioned, it really doesn’t take into account the individual’s interests. This may often lead to a sensitive situation with the people you respect and admire. At this point, it often seems easier to follow the advice as opposed to going a different route, even if your instincts are telling you otherwise.
Another reason people find themselves in the wrong career is simply pride. It’s pretty hard to admit you’ve made a mistake, even to yourself. After someone has invested time and money into a career, it’s hard to say that it’s now time for a change. After all, what happens to all the time, energy and money you’ve invested in this career? Does it all go for nothing?
In reality, the skills and experiences you’ve gained getting to the point you’re at now, are yours to keep. No one can take them away from you. This means that even if you leave for a different career altogether the skills you’ve gained may actually enhance your transition. All experiences you undergo can help enhance your personality, skills and passion to do right by yourself. This is true even if it means making a serious career change.
Making the decision to be happy is the most difficult part of any kind of change. It becomes even more difficult when you’re also dealing with a salary and job security. However, if you’re serious about following your passions, it’s never too late. You may need to invest in training and networking. However, hard work and a strong spirit will help lead you to happiness.
